Summary of the contracting process

The Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (HITRANS) is seeking bids for the supply and installation of Variable Message Boards (VMBs) as part of an open tender process. This procurement, classified under the goods category, is taking place in Inverness, UK, with a deadline for submissions set for 18 December 2020. The project aims to replace three outdated VMBs located on key routes (A830, A87, and A851) to enhance the accuracy of travel information provided to ferry passengers. Interested businesses should ensure that they submit their proposals electronically via the Public Contracts Scotland website.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for companies specialising in signage, digital displays, or transport technology, particularly those with experience in supply and installation of VMBs. Businesses that can demonstrate technical capability, quality assurance, and relevant project experience will be well-positioned to compete. It is essential for bidders to provide robust evidence of their previous work and references from clients in a similar sector to meet the stringent criteria outlined by HITRANS.

Supply and Installation of Variable Message Boards

Notice Description

(CalMac Ferries Ltd) CFL operates 27 variable message boards (VMBs) around its ferry network. These signs display route information and are centrally managed by CFL's Service Updates Team (SUT) in Gourock using a single application. The boards are to replace existing boards at the following routes: - A830 (Opp Lochaber High School at Fort William): Information for all Mallaig services - A87 (at Skye Bridge): Information for all Uig services - A851(Broadford near A87 Junction): Information for all Armadale services Only these three are in scope of this procurement. The information displayed on these boards is out of date as the services provided at Mallaig, Uig, and Armadale have changed since installation. In addition, the boards use out of date technology that is relatively expensive to maintain and prevents accurate information being relayed to passengers en route to their port of departure. Therefore, CFL will be replacing the three VMBs.
