Notice Title
NHS Doncaster CCG - Sharps Bin Delivery, Collection & Disposal Service
Notice Description
An increasing number of patients, such as diabetics or those who are required to inject blood thinners during the post-operative period, are able to self-medicate without the need for a healthcare practitioner to administer injections. Primary and Secondary Care providers; NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group; and Doncaster Council each have statutory duties to ensure the health, safety and well-being of Doncaster residents and self-medicating patients by enabling these individuals to safely manage their condition(s) at home. Patients who self-inject must: - Be trained in the correct assembly of sharps bins; - Know how to use the temporary closure of sharps bins (for safety whilst in use); - Know how to lock the sharps bin once full (for safety prior to collection); - Know how to access new needles and medication when needed; - Know the timetable for the collection and delivery of their sharps bin which is usually on a no less than quarterly basis but patients requiring a temporary, one-off, or alternative collection frequency will need to know who to contact to make a change / service request; - Know how to arrange for a new sharps bin to be delivered; and - Have their waste collected safely and efficiently in a timely fashion as detailed in their collection schedule. The Service Provider is required to provide timely and cost effective sharps bin delivery, collection and disposal services from nominated patient homes in full compliance with all applicable health and safety, waste and transport legislation.
