Notice Title
RWM220 The Assessment of Subsidiary Hazards Associated with Transport of Waste Packages
Notice Description
One of the key aims of RWM is to ensure that when waste is packaged by waste producers, it is in a form which is suitable for safe storage, transport, handling and potential disposal. Waste packaging proposals are assessed through our Disposability Assessment process [ ]. One element of a Disposability Assessment is a Transport Safety Assessment, whereby the suitability of a packaging proposal is assessed against the requirements for transport through the public domain to a geological disposal facility [ ]. The safety of radioactive waste transport is ensured through compliance with the IAEA Transport Regulations [ ], the fundamental principal of which is that safety is ensured through the design of packages and limits imposed on their contents. Demonstration of the safety of transport packages is made in a Package Design Safety Report (PDSR). The objectives of this piece of work are to; * identify the hazards associated with the materials listed in Table 1, * determine the applicable dangerous goods regulations, limits, packaging requirements and provisions associated with the transport of these hazards as subsidiary hazards to Class 7 materials by road, rail, and sea (inland waterways to be excluded), and * where a particular material exceeds the scope of the regulations, provide guidance on how an exemption maybe achieved through the UK Competent Authority, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR).
