Notice Description

The Eye Casualty Follow Up Service will be offered to all emergency ophthalmology patients where initial assessment has been completed by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust that meet the clinical criteria, and choose to be followed up in a local optometry practise This tender is seeking a Sub-Contractor to deliver the following: Provide safe emergency eye care follow up appointments in community based optometric practices by community optometrists. Supported by direct access to and oversight from secondary care clinicians. Release capacity within the Eye Casualty department by reducing follow up demand to support reducing current long wait backlog. This shall be achieved by reducing unnecessary attendances to the Eye Casualty department for patients while maintaining or improving patient experience. Improve access to local timely care for patients with urgent ocular presentations, reducing the need to travel to the hospital. Improve the knowledge and skills of community optometrists to enable improved first-time emergency care through providing opportunities to achieve an accredited Emergency Ophthalmology certification (Ophthalmic Combined Clinical Competency Framework which is accredited and supported by Health Education England) and independent prescribing. Reduce the expected burden on the rest of primary care (GP practices) and reduce pressures on ophthalmology departments within secondary care. Increase the punctuality of appointments for patients through separation of emergency and follow up activity. Give patients the opportunity to be seen by the right person at the right time. Enable care closer to home. The contract duration will run from 10th July 2023 for a four year period.
