Summary of the contracting process

Aston University, based in Birmingham, has completed a procurement process for VMware software licences, essential for their digital infrastructure, including services in virtualisation, virtual desktop platforms, and management software. This contract, titled "VMware Software Licences," falls under the database and operating software package category, with a value of £1,187,068.05. The process utilised a selective procurement method through a call-off from a framework agreement. MTI Technology Limited has been awarded the contract, with servicing set to commence on 28th April 2026 and expected to conclude on 27th April 2029.

This tender presents significant opportunities for large companies in the technology services sector, particularly those specialising in virtualisation software and infrastructure solutions. Though the procurement is now awarded, businesses with capabilities in bespoke software licensing solutions, software support, and infrastructure management could look for similar contract opportunities. By establishing frameworks or partnerships with educational institutions, companies can leverage such contracts as a means of expanding their market presence and demonstrating expertise in servicing complex operational needs.

Notice Description

VMware licenses provide the virtual infrastructure (private cloud) for the whole University and the most advantageous licence for the scale the University uses is the Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) and is priced based the number of devices to be covered (processor cores). This virtualisation software is a critical service used by the University and runs all of the campus-based systems, including: 1) General Virtual/Cloud environment on campus a. Infrastructure servers b. Academic Servers c. Research serves d. Business engagement 2) The SITS infrastructure 3) The Virtual Desktop (VDI) service 4) Security and management platforms for the above 5) Training Credits so we keep up with the technology.
