Summary of the contracting process

The University of Birmingham is seeking tenders for the supply and installation of a cryomagnetic system for low-temperature physics experiments. The system, to be used as part of a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship-funded research lab, must include a liquid helium cryostat fitted with a high-field magnet. The procurement, classified under the CPV code 38340000 (Instruments for measuring quantities), is currently in the Tender stage, with an end date for tenders set for 11th December 2024. The anticipated contract period will commence on 1st January 2025 and conclude on 1st January 2026, with the project's location at Edgbaston, Birmingham (postal code B15 2TT). The contract value is estimated at £270,000, with the procurement method defined as an open procedure above threshold.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in cryogenics and low-temperature physics instruments to engage with a prestigious university. Businesses that provide advanced scientific equipment, particularly those capable of delivering and maintaining complex cryogenic systems, will find this tender particularly suitable. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to apply, providing a chance to collaborate within the academic research space and opening avenues for future partnerships and innovations.

Notice Description

The University of Birmingham invites tenders for supply and installation of a liquid helium ("wet") cryostat fitted with high-field magnet - a cryomagnetic system - suitable for low-temperature physics experiments. The cryomagnetic system will form part of a research lab being established via a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship funding award, for measuring high-field transport and magnetic properties of quantum materials at low temperatures. The cryomagnet is intended to accommodate a variety of probes and inserts, sourced separately, to allow a wide range of sample environment including access to very low temperature as well as a strong, homogenous and stable magnetic field. Funding stipulates that the system will be open to users outside the group, so the equipment interface should be user friendly, and should interface with existing computer code used in the group. The cryomagnetic system should house a superconducting magnet assembly with a maximum field strength of at least 16 T (with reversible polarity). The magnet must be able to be switched in and out of persistent-current or driven modes of operation in the standard manner for physics laboratory cryomagnets. Suitable current sources, cryogenic liquid monitors and temperature monitoring should also be included, with easy-to-use computer interfaces to allow MATLAB code to query all these values and send commands to control all aspects of the magnet, including magnetic field ramps. The instrument should connect directly with the University of Birmingham's helium liquefier system. It should be delivered, installed, and tested on site with a maintenance and service package, with provision of on-site training.
