Notice Title

Comparative Judgement

Notice Description

The Standards and Testing Agency (STA) are keen to speak to comparative judgement suppliers as it explores potential long-term alternatives to statutory teacher assessment of writing in primary schools in England. In England, teachers are required to make statutory teacher assessment judgements for pupils at the end of key stage 2* (year 6) in English writing. In the Government response to the 2017 Primary Assessment consultation, and having listened to feedback from the schools sector, the Department for Education committed itself to exploring comparative judgement as a potential long-term alternative to the teacher assessment of writing at the end of key stage 2. Having conducted some initial engagement with assessment experts and teaching professionals the Standards and Testing Agency, an executive agency of the Department, is now interested in speaking to comparative judgement suppliers to discuss how their systems could potentially work as the basis for a new approach to the statutory assessment of English writing. Interested Suppliers should provide their contact details (email address and telephone number) to linh.hy@education.gov.uk by Friday 11th January 2019. They will then be invited via email into the Department to meet with the STA's Policy Team in the New Year. * Following feedback from the Primary Assessment consultation, we will be making assessments at end of key stage 1 non-statutory as soon as the reception baseline assessment has become fully established. We intend to make this change from the 2022 to 2023 academic year onwards.
