The Council also has a statutory duty to make provision for the care of pets of people who are taken into hospital. This duty, initially laid down in section 48 of the National Assistance Act 1948, has since been amended under the Care Act 2014. This means that the Council must board and care for these animals unless or until there are friends or relatives of the person who can do this.
