Summary of the contracting process

The contracting process for procurement involved the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, aimed at acquiring a high-resolution environmental scanning electron microscope (eSEM) suitable for biological sample analysis. This falls under the 'Scanning electron microscopes' industry category, located in the North East region of the United Kingdom. The procurement reached the award stage, with Thermo Fisher Scientific (FEI UK Ltd.) recognised as the supplier. The contract, valued at £220,820, commenced on 1st September 2025 and is set to conclude on 31st August 2027. Key dates included the tender period ending on 16th July 2025, and the award notice published on 24th July 2025. The procurement followed a process marked as "Other" in method classification, with the procurement of goods being the main category.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in the manufacture and supply of advanced scientific equipment, especially those specialising in electron microscopy and related fields. The inclusion of installation, training, and a two-year service and maintenance contract further allows companies providing support services for sophisticated equipment, like scientific instrumentation trainers and service providers, to engage. While larger, established firms like Thermo Fisher Scientific emerged as the supplier, innovative SMEs equipped to deliver high-performance solutions with a robust service component may also find similar opportunities to grow their business through such procurements. The project demands expertise in high-resolution imaging and biological material analysis, ideal for companies with capabilities in these high-tech service areas.
