Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process involves Newcastle University seeking suppliers for the provision of menstrual care products on campus, titled "(NU/1504) Menstrual Care on Campus". This initiative arises from a growing recognition of menstrual hygiene management as a vital public health issue, supported by various student-led campaigns. The procurement, classified under the CPV category for medical equipment and personal care products, is currently in the Tender stage. Interested bidders have until 21st June 2019 to submit their proposals, with the contract expected to commence on 1st September 2019 and last until 31st August 2020, with a total value of £40,000.

This tender presents a valuable opportunity for businesses specialising in personal care products, particularly those offering sanitary items such as towels and tampons. Companies focusing on social responsibility and sustainable practices in personal care could particularly benefit, as the endeavour aligns with efforts to increase accessibility and affordability of menstrual products for university students. As the procurement method is open, this process encourages a competitive environment that can foster innovation and inclusivity within the supply chain.

Notice Title

(NU/1504) Menstrual Care on Campus

Notice Description

In recent years, menstrual hygiene management has gained increasing recognition "as an issue of social justice within the context of public health" as a result of the work of a global coalition of academics, nongovernmental organisations and grassroots activists. Since 2016, Newcastle Universities Students Union (NUSU) has made menstrual care products freely accessible from their Student Advice Centre. Newcastle University students launched an online petition calling for free menstrual care products on campus and NUSU Student Council voted unanimously in support of the stance that "the University should fund free menstrual care products across campus". This stance was also endorsed by Newcastle University Feminist Society and the NUSU Marginalised Genders Officer. Attendees at NUSU Student Council expressed support for their tuition fee investment being used towards this proposal. Newcastle University Executive Board endorsed this stance in early 2019 and is now looking to implement it on Campus for all students.
