Summary of the contracting process

The Department of Health is currently seeking providers for a tender titled "Mental Health Awareness Training in Secondary Schools", which falls under the education and training services category. The procurement process is in the Tender stage, with a deadline for submissions set for 14th February 2019. The contract, valued at £265,000, will commence on 31st March 2019 and conclude on 31st March 2020. This initiative aims to equip secondary school staff with vital skills to recognise and address mental health issues among students across various locations, including the United Kingdom and its British Overseas Territories.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in education and mental health training services, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Companies with expertise in delivering mental health first aid training and those experienced in educational settings will be particularly well-suited to compete. The initiative aims to create a more supportive environment in schools, and businesses that can demonstrate effective training methodologies could find themselves well-positioned to secure contracts under this programme.

Notice Title

Mental Health Awareness Training in Secondary Schools

Notice Description

Mental illness disproportionately affects young people - over half of mental health problems start by the age of 14, and 75 per cent by the age of 18. Just as with physical health, there is a duty to make sure that young people who are struggling with their mental health have access to all the support and care that they need, including within schools. 1.2 A Government Teacher Voice survey in 2016 found that only just over half (57%) of teachers said they felt equipped to identify behaviour that may be linked to a mental health issue, and only 40% of teachers said they felt equipped to teach children in the classroom with mental health needs. 1.3 That is why In January 2017 the Prime Minister committed to having mental health 'first aid' (awareness) training available to all secondary schools, aiming to have trained at least one teacher in every secondary school by 2020, to help spot the early symptoms of mental health issues, and make sure that the child receives the support they need.
