Summary of the contracting process

The University of Essex initiated a tender process for the "T827 Library Level 2 Refurbishment" project, which focuses on refurbishing the south wing of the Albert Sloman library located in Colchester, United Kingdom. This project is classified under refurbishment work and aims to enhance the study environment with increased power points and modern study spaces. The tender period ended on 12 August 2019, while the contract period commenced on 26 August 2019 and concluded on 13 December 2019. The awarded contract was valued at £193,000 and was granted to Hutton Construction Ltd. The tender is classified as complete.

This refurbishment project offers substantial opportunities for construction and refurbishment firms, particularly those specialising in educational facilities and modernisation of existing structures. Businesses with expertise in creating multi-functional study spaces or installing modern technology infrastructures would be particularly well-suited to engage in similar procurement processes. The emphasis on improving student facilities indicates a growing trend in educational sector projects, presenting a pathway for firms looking to expand their operations within this market.

Notice Title

T827 Library Level 2 Refurbishment

Notice Description

The University of Essex is seeking tenders for the provision of the Albert Sloman 2nd floor refurbishment project in accordance with this Invitation to Tender and the attached documents. The south wing of the Albert Sloman library is very gloomy and shabby with crowded shelves and a lack of light in comparison to it's newer library extension counrterpart. The original 1960's infrastructure provided little power to study spaces, something which has been improved slightly in recent years, but there is still a huge demand for more power points to enable students to use their laptops and other devices in the Library. Students and other library users expect the same level of facilities and quality of environment throughout the whole library building .The new extension and recently refurbished Library Reading Room highlight the inadequacy of the south wing facilties. This year (2018-19) SU officers have identified study space as one of the 'Big 5' priorities for students, with a particular focus on the need to increase the number of technology enabled study spaces in the south wing and to improve the study environment in the ASL building. This project aims to fully refurbish one floor of the south wing, which will enable us to address student concerns and move closer to achieving a 'one library' feel, while increasing the number of power enabled, modern individual study spaces available to students.
