Summary of the contracting process

The UK Biobank Ltd is conducting a procurement process for the supply of blood collection kits vital for its study on the seroprevalence of COVID-19. This tender, titled "Procurement of blood collection kits for the UK Biobank study of seroprevalence of COVID-19", falls under the medical consumables industry category, specifically classified as disposable non-chemical medical consumables. The procurement method employed is limited, with the contract awarded on 23 April 2020, valued at £474,000, and running until 23 October 2020. The delivery is required to the North West region of England, and the tender process was completed prior to the 1 January 2020 deadline.

This procurement presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in medical consumables, particularly those capable of providing rapid and efficient supply of testing kits. Companies that are nimble and can meet urgent demands, especially those with experience in healthcare supply chains, would be well-positioned to compete. The nature of this contract suggests that firms with established distribution capabilities and compliance with healthcare regulations could leverage this opportunity for growth.

Notice Title

Procurement of blood collection kits for the UK Biobank study of seroprevalence of COVID-19

Notice Description

UK Biobank ("UKB") is conducting a study of seroprevalence of COVID 19 in the population of up to 20,000 of its participants and their adult children and grandchildren (the "Study"). The Study (which is funded for an initial period of 6 months by the Department of Health and Social Care) aims to collect blood samples from study participants each month for an initial period of six months and measure these samples to assess the extent of previous infection with the SARS CoV 2 coronavirus (by measuring blood antibodies) in different locations and age groups across the UK. In order to enable the Study, UKB needed a supplier to provide testing kits which could be mailed to study participants and safely returned to UKB's laboratory in Cheadle before testing. There was an urgent need to secure supply of kits (which are globally in high demand) to enable the study to go ahead without delay. Med DX were identified as a supplier who were able to provide these kits to enable the Study to commence within the required urgent timeframe.
