Summary of the contracting process

The National Nuclear Laboratory Limited is currently in the planning stage for a tender titled "Stand-Off Alpha Radiation Detection Under Daylight Conditions," seeking innovative methods and technologies for detecting sources of alpha radiation from a distance during daytime. The procurement process is part of the Game Changers programme and includes a workshop scheduled for November 2021. Interested parties should note that the deadline for engagement is set for 30th November 2021. Relevant industry categories include apparatus for measuring radiation and associated research and development services, with the opportunity based in the United Kingdom.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in radiation detection technologies and those with expertise in research and experimental development services. Companies capable of developing innovative solutions that address the specified technical requirements are encouraged to engage, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that can demonstrate relevant capabilities. As the outcome of this challenge may lead to future procurement exercises, firms poised to advance in this niche technology area stand to benefit from potential collaborations and contract awards following this initial phase.

Notice Title

Stand-Off Alpha Radiation Detection Under Daylight Conditions

Notice Description

This PIN is to inform the supply chain that the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) and the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) are seeking methods and technologies that can detect sources of alpha radiation from a distance of several meters in daylight conditions. If this can be achieved it would improve operator safety and efficiency, as well as increasing the speed with which potential radiological hazards and threats can be identified. This challenge will be administered though the Game Changers programme and advertised via a challenge statement on the Game Changers website during October and November 2021. This challenge statement will provide a detailed overview of the challenge, including AWE and NNL's technical requirements along with any deployment restrictions. A workshop will be held during November 2021 where AWE and NNL will further describe the challenge. Details of the workshop will be shared on the Game Changers website. Interested technology providers should complete and submit a Game Changers application via the Game Changers website www.gamechangers.technology. The challenge is open to any organisation who feel they can meet the technical requirements. The closing date for applications will be in November 2021. Interested organisations should note that the issue of this PIN may not result in a full procurement exercise being conducted. The outcome of the Game Changers Challenge will determine whether a full procurement exercise will follow. We would therefore encourage any organisation which has the capability, knowledge and experience with alpha radiation detecting technologies to respond to this PIN and visit the Game Changers website for further information on the upcoming Game Changers Challenge. If AWE and NNL progress to a future procurement opportunity for the stand-off detection of alpha radiation under daylight conditions, the learning gathered from the Game Changers technology study may be shared with all potential suppliers, noting that commercially sensitive information will not be included. Additional information: For full details please visit the Game Changers website at www.gamechangers.technology.
