Notice Title

Children and Young People's Specialist Bereavement Service, NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (Wakefield District Health and Care Partnership)

Notice Description

An all-age review of bereavement provision recognized a gap in commissioned bereavement support for children and young people. The core bereavement support for a child is their family, friends and the professionals who know them, such as school, these individuals and professionals, it's a life event which is sad and difficult but one which they live through and overcome. Unfortunately for some children and young people this is not the case and this service specification has been developed to provide a Specialist Bereavement Service. The service will provide support and therapy for children, young people and their families where a child or young person (CYP) has more prolonged and complex emotional and mental well-being needs due to bereavement. We're seeking a provider who can deliver an excellent inclusive and evidence based therapeutic approach to supporting children and young people who have been bereaved. The service will need to offer a range of therapies to meet individual need, as the age range and abilities of children can vary so widely. The service must be able to adapt their provision to meet the needs of children with neurodiversity, special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and those who have developmental trauma. The service will need to have strong governance and safeguarding policies and practice in place to ensure the children and young people are safe. The service provider will be expected to work as part of Wakefield Families Together, which emphasizes working together across services and agencies. The service provider will need to work partnership with a number of services, including where appropriate with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. In Wakefield, schools and services use the Wakefield Resilience Framework to support the delivery of services which will help our children and young people to feel happy, healthy and safe living in communities where they can achieve their potential and their dreams. Grief is a normal reaction to the death of someone close, a sibling, parents, grandparents, other relatives and friends. Although often seen as primarily emotional, grief is multi-facetted with physical, cognitive, spiritual and behavioural dimensions, and grief can begin before the death, for example where there is a palliative diagnosis. For many children and young people, bereavement also brings life changes and challenges alongside adjusting to and developing a new life without the person who died. Many children, young people and parents/carers find that their inner resources, combined with support from family and friends, are sufficient to help them manage their distress and the life changes and adjustments triggered by loss. Support to help children, young people, parents and families to manage their grief range from the provision of information through community and school-based resources, and support with resilience and emotional literacy, to more intensive, specialist help.
