Notice Title

Reporting Radiography evaluation

Notice Description

PIN as a call for a Direct Award. Rapid diagnosis is one way to improve outcomes and experience for patients who present with a potential cancer diagnosis however, a shortage of consultant radiologists means there are delays in the provision of timely and accurate imaging reports. Radiographer reporting is one method to increase diagnostic capacity in a safe, effective, and efficient way. As part of the Phase 1 Cancer Workforce Plan, Health Education England (HEE) committed to train 300 reporting radiographers over two years. Training capacity, variability in local workforce and possible impact on clinical services were identified as potential barriers to successful delivery of the radiographer reporting programme, especially for departments without a critical mass of experienced reporting radiographers. The education of reporting radiographers requires successful completion of a master's level qualification at a higher educational institute accredited by the College of Radiographers, underpinned by a significant component of workplace learning. Whilst there has been some regional data collection undertaken concerning the success of this funding offer, there has not yet been any formal evaluation at national level. It is anticipated that post pandemic, there will be renewed interest in the training of reporting radiographers and therefore to maximise the effectiveness of the future funding offers, it is proposed that a nationally led evaluation is undertaken to support the continuation of this vital programme or work. The aim is to undertake an evaluative project that identifies specific metrics concerning the completion and resultant service delivery impacts of the reporting radiographer funding since 2020. To identify and outline barriers and challenges that affected the nationally led offer and make recommendations to support the efficiency and direction of future funding offers within the area of reporting radiography. The outcomes from this project will support key deliverables of the NHSEI/HEE national imaging workforce plan 21/22 and actions needed for 2022/23 Further details and a direct award document can be downloaded from the link below. https://health-family.force.com/s/Welcome
