Notice Title

Gun & Cannon Maintenance & Maintenance Plus Works - AWARD

Notice Description

English Heritage is responsible for a nationally significant collection of 413 cannons, carriages and guns across 29 historic sites (71 objects at 6 sites in the north; 137 objects at 7 sites in the west; 205 objects at 16 sites in the south). Approximately one quarter are on long term loan to English Heritage but owned by other organisations. A total of 95 cannon and 30 carriages loaned items are displayed over 17 of English Heritage sites. The majority of loans belong to the Royal Armouries, with a total of 112 (21 in cannon in West, 61 cannon in South, the rest being associated carriages). The remainder are individual loans which have an association with the site, such as the 'Roaring Meg' mortar on display at Goodrich Castle. A high proportion of the guns and cannons are situated on coastal sites, and as such are exposed to extremely challenging environmental conditions, necessitating continued conservation maintenance to keep them in a stable condition. Treatment for both those owned by English Heritage and those on loan is undertaken to the same standard, materials and specifications; with the Royal Armouries having been consulted whilst writing the guidance specifications.
