Notice Title

T0015 Live trial for reducing lead-in signals for incidents

Notice Description

Highways England is looking to set up a contract for the provision of technical consultancy to carry out and assess an on-road trial of a reduced number and distance of lead-in variable signs and signals (VSS) on the approach to an incident. The trial will take place in the East Midlands region of the Highways England network and will require software changes to the current signal sequencing rules. The objective of this work package is to determine whether: - a reduction in the number and distance of warning signs and signals on the lead-in to incidents is any less safe than current practice - there is any detrimental impact on road user behaviour as a result of sign failure if the number of VSS are reduced - a reduced number and distance of VSS on the lead-in to an incident should be applied nationally
