Summary of the contracting process

The University of Essex is procuring a contractor for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of solar photovoltaic panels at its Colchester Campus. This project is part of a broader initiative aligned with the university's Carbon Management Plan, aiming for completion in 2020. The tender is currently in the open stage of the procurement process and is expected to close for submissions by midday on 13th March 2020. The project has an estimated value of £550,000 and falls under the works category related to solar panel installation and electrical installation work.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses in the renewable energy sector, particularly those specialising in solar photovoltaic systems, electrical installations, and general contracting. Companies that hold the necessary accreditations, such as NICEIC for electrical works and certifications related to solar PV, will be well-positioned to compete. Additionally, businesses with experience in projects funded through Salix and those adept at delivering technical solutions in line with sustainability goals will find this opportunity particularly appealing.

Notice Title

Design, Supply, Installation and Commissioning of Solar Photovoltaic Panels at The University of Essex, Colchester Campus

Notice Description

The University of Essex is seeking to appoint a suitably accredited, qualified and experienced contractor for the design, supply, install, testing and commissioning of solar photovoltaic systems here at our campus in Colchester, Essex, for completion during 2020. Robust connections to the mains electricity network in each building are also be part of the scope. A desktop analysis of the suitable campus roofs has established that there is up to 3,401m2 of roof space available for the installation of Solar PV arrays. The main driver for the Solar PV project is to save energy in line with our Carbon Management Plan, to reduce grid import and reduce carbon emissions, in a cost-effective manner with a reasonable capital cost payback term. Thirteen buildings across the estate have been identified as having suitable south facing aspects with no shadow totalling a roof area of 11,354m2. It has been assumed that 30% of this figure will be useful for the installation of suitable PV arrays. The project is to be part funded via Salix funding so each building and the full proposal for the campus needs to comply with Salix investment criteria and hurdle rates. The approach for each building should be tailored to support this aim. A site plan has been attached which can be cross referenced with Google Maps: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.8772583,0.9449303,591m/data=!3m1!1e3 The University also has a map on our website that shows building's locations: https://findyourway.essex.ac.uk/ The successful contractor will be appointed under the JCT Design and Build Contract 2016.
