Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process for the partial deck refurbishment of the M20 Thurnham Lane North and Water Lane North & South structures, under the title "622469 M20 Thurnham Lane and Water Lane N&S," was conducted by National Highways, a significant organisation located in Birmingham, England. This process, classified under the industry category "Surface work for highways," follows a call-off from a framework agreement procurement method. The procurement, now in the award stage, was initiated to address essential infrastructure updates necessary for September 2025. The contract period initiated on 19th May 2025 and concluded on 18th July 2025, covering locations in the South East and South West of the United Kingdom, with a tender period that ended on 18th May 2025.

The awarded contract presents an attractive opportunity for businesses in the construction and civil engineering sector, particularly those specialising in highway surface works. The procurement was valued at £12,471.54, and F M Conway Limited, a large-scale company, was the successful supplier. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) would find this type of contract beneficial for scaling operations, as such selective procurement processes require specific expertise and capacity, making SMEs well-suited for similar future projects. The focus on infrastructure refurbishment aligns with broader public sector investment strategies, offering a promising avenue for business growth in the industry.

Notice Title

622469 M20 Thurnham Lane and Water Lane N&S

Notice Description

The M20 Thurnham Lane North and Water Lane North & South structures are undergoing partial deck refurbishment, which is scheduled for September 2025. For all three bridge structures, the Preferred Option to address the stated network need and based on a Whole Life Costing of viable options, is Option 2; to replace the West expansion joint from stringcourse to stringcourse with Part 3 Flexible Plug Joint. This requires a surfacing inlay with HRA the full length of each bridge and 15m beyond each joint in order to accept the replacement joint. On all three structures, to preserve the existing East Joint, and to maintain the running surface over the joint, transition strips using flexible plug joint material are to be laid to the back of the joint rails. For each bridge, the longitudinal joint on the structure is to be raked out and replaced with polysulphide sealant. This approach ensures a consistent solution across all three bridge structures.
