Notice Title

QU054 Provision for an Assessment and Proposition for Growth of Life Sciences Sector in Birmingham

Notice Description

Birmingham has transformed itself into a truly international city and premier business destination. In excess of 33m people visit each year for work and leisure, and the committed PS1bn of public sector investment over the next few years in transport and digital infrastructure, will make Birmingham one of the most desirable business locations, and easiest cities to get to and move around in. Already established as an economic hub, with the largest professional and financial centre outside London, the priority for the next two decades is to further diversify the local economy, maximise its competitive advantages, and provide world class facilities for local, regional, national and international citizens. The city's 'civic leaders' recognise Birmingham's potential and by working in partnership with hospital trusts, Universities and the business community, they are not just developing independent projects - they are delivering a strategic framework of operational support at the heart of the country: "By 2031, Birmingham will be renowned as an enterprising, innovative and green city that has undergone transformational change, growing its economy and strengthening its position on the international stage." The vision, set out in the Birmingham Development Plan and echoed in the Economic Zones Prospectus, firmly articulates the forward thinking strategy that the City Council and its multi-faceted partners intend to pursue, to make sure that Birmingham remains the West Midlands capital, the UK's second city and a major player internationally. An important element of the vision is recognition of Birmingham's pre-eminence in the life sciences sector, centred within Edgbaston / Selly Oak, and primarily focussed on the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital and University of Birmingham campuses.
