Summary of the contracting process

The University of Northumbria at Newcastle is currently in the tender stage of a procurement process for an atomic layer deposition (ALD) system, aimed at supporting its research and development activities. This opportunity, classified under "Checking and testing apparatus" in the goods category, has a total value of £500,000, with a minimum threshold of £100,000. The tender period concludes on 18th May 2021, after which the contract is scheduled to commence on 1st October 2021 and run until 1st October 2024. The location for delivery is within the North East region of the United Kingdom, and the procurement method employed is an open procedure, welcoming all interested suppliers.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary community sector enterprises (VCSEs) to showcase their capabilities in providing innovative laboratory equipment. The emphasis on an upgradeable and expandable ALD system opens avenues for businesses specialising in precision instruments and laboratory technologies. Suppliers who can meet the requirements for controllable and repeatable film deposition, as well as provide additional components like vacuum pumps and exhaust gas management systems, would be well-suited to compete for this contract, thus enhancing their business growth in the scientific equipment sector.

Notice Title

GB-Newcastle: T20/0047

Notice Description

Northumbria university requires an atomic layer deposition (ALD) system for the conformal deposition of ultra-thin films with low pinhole densities for nanometer scale structures and devices. The system should be upgradeable and expandable in nature (e.g. plasma enhanced, additional lines) to allow for multi-disciplinary R&D activities and future range of materials. The ALD system should allow for repeatable and controllable ultra-thin films from recipes and also allow the user to develop their own process/recipes. The ALD system should be ready to commission onsite by simply connecting to the Lab services, therefore, all associated components are to be included, such as (not limited to) vacuum pumps, abatement for safe disposal of exhaust gases, system control and monitoring. Additional information: The contracting authority considers that this contract may be suitable for economic operators that are small or medium enterprises (SMEs). However, any selection of tenderers will be based solely on the criteria set out for the procurement.
