Notice Title

PAN1656 - Waste Composition Analysis

Notice Description

Leicester City council through the operation of a 25year PFI contract with Biffa Leicester, collect, treat and dispose of all municipal waste generated by Leicester residents. This includes treatment of the refuse collected through the 'Ball Mill' which is used to extract the organic fraction, metals, and RDF leaving an inert fraction for final disposal in landfill. The organic fraction is then treated in our Anaerobic Digester. To establish the materials contained in our waste streams and to provide high resolution information Leicester City Council intends to undertake a Waste Composition Analysis (WCA) of 4 key waste streams: * Household recycling (orange bag or bin) * Household refuse (black bin) * Inert stream (waste destine for landfill after processing by the Ball Mill) * Floc or RDF (baled waste fraction sent as RDF) The information gathered on the materials contained within our waste streams, will allow better understanding of the wastes generated in Leicester, the potential to increase recycling rates, and help guide future strategies. The information will also help our understanding of our current capture rates and shape our future strategies for encouraging waste minimisation and tailored communication campaigns.
