The buyer, West Midlands Combined Authority, sought solutions in the realm of software consultancy services to address air quality challenges in the West Midlands, particularly focusing on pollutants like Nitrogen Dioxide and Particulate Matter. The contract, awarded to Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants (CERC), spans from 28th April 2025 to 30th September 2028, with a potential extension until 30th September 2031. This tender was conducted under a competitive quotation process, with a procurement method classified as limited, aiming to ensure environmental services are effectively managed within the targeted region. The process reached the award stage on 4th April 2025, meticulously planning for an innovative system that uses the UK government 10-point DAQI scale for pollution levels.

This tender offers substantial business growth opportunities, especially for SMEs specialising in environmental technology and software development. Companies like CERC, already recognised for their expertise in these domains, can leverage their skills to provide sustainable solutions tailored to local government needs. The project also stands as an opportunity for businesses with niche capabilities in air quality monitoring and forecasting to demonstrate their technical prowess and innovation. The West Midlands region serves as an ideal locale for businesses aiming to establish or expand their presence in public sector environmental projects, thereby contributing to broader societal goals of reducing air pollution and enhancing public health.
