Summary of the contracting process

The University of Exeter has completed a tender process for the procurement of medical imaging services, specifically focusing on PET and MRI scanning, radioligand production, LPS supply, and biomarker analysis. This procurement, classified under the CPV code 85150000, was executed using a limited procurement method, negotiated without the publication of a contract notice. The contract, valued at £726,480, was signed on 6th July 2021 and involved Invicro as the awarded supplier. The services are particularly critical in the UK, as Invicro is the sole provider of specific PET tracers essential for ongoing studies, situated conveniently within the Hammersmith Hospital Campus to facilitate participant assessments.

This tender presents substantial growth opportunities for businesses involved in medical imaging and related research services, particularly those capable of providing advanced PET and MRI scanning technologies or radioligand production. Companies that specialise in healthcare technologies, scientific research, and laboratory services would be well-positioned to compete, especially if they can demonstrate innovative solutions or unique capabilities in producing essential tracers or conducting complex analyses. The focus on specialised services and the limited nature of the procurement process indicate a market that favours established and capable suppliers who can efficiently meet specific research needs.

Notice Description

PET and MRI scanning, radioligand production, LPS (lipopolysaccharid) supply and biomarker analysis

Lot Information

Lot 1

PET and MRI scanning, radioligand production, LPS (lipopolysaccharid) supply and biomarker analysis * Only UK provider of PET tracers [11C]BU90008, [11C]SA4503, and [18F]BCPP-EF, that are currently used for our studies. * Invicro is located within the Hammersmith Hospital Campus, its location accommodates research participants for image and clinical assessments without increased burden and travel for the participants. While also reducing cost and time to conduct the studies. * [11C] tracers (with short half-life of about 20 minutes) and of [18F] radiotracers (with half-life of about 120 minutes) are produced in house and the short half-life of the [11C] tracers means Invicro's two in-house cyclotron's must be used. Their radioligand development platform means implementation of new tracers is not available at other facilities. * Invicro has the equipment and facilities to collect arterial blood samples during the scans and analyze the quantity of the radioactive metabolites on site.
