Summary of the contracting process

The General Medical Council (GMC) is currently engaged in a public procurement process for 'Toxicology Services', classified under toxic substances monitoring services within the healthcare industry. This tender is part of an open procurement method and is in the active tender stage. The submission deadline is 19th August 2022, with electronic submissions accepted through the specified website. The service will be delivered in the UK, and the overall contract duration is expected to be 720 days, with a potential extension of an additional 12 months.

This tender presents valuable opportunities for businesses in the health and medical testing field, particularly those specialising in toxicology assessments, laboratory services, and health monitoring. Companies that can provide blood, hair, saliva, urine, and breath testing are particularly well-suited to compete for this contract, as the GMC requires comprehensive toxicology testing as part of its fitness to practise proceedings. Engaging with the GMC could significantly enhance a business's portfolio and establish lasting relationships within the public healthcare sector.

Toxicology Services

Notice Description

Where there are concerns about a registrant's physical or mental health, we may require the registrant to undergo a health assessment. This may form one part of a wider investigation into a registrant's fitness to practise. At the end of an investigation, a registrant may enter into a period of medical supervision to monitor their health condition and compliance with any restrictions on their registration. Toxicology testing is required as part of the GMC's Fitness to Practise proceedings in order to establish: - if and what substances have been/are being used by the registrant (this is of particular help in health assessments) - if the registrant has complied with undertakings or conditions (which is of particular help for the purposes of medical supervision). This is mostly done using blood and hair tests at present, although nail, saliva, urine and breath tests can be carried out at the GMC's discretion.
