Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process titled "Trawsfynydd Reactor Buildings Height Reduction" is managed by Nuclear Restoration Services Limited, focusing on demolition work within the works industry category. The location for this procurement is the Trawsfynydd Site in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, North Wales. As of the latest update on 7th October 2025, the process has reached the award stage, with Costain Limited being the awarded supplier for a contract value of £71,813,292. This was a competitive procedure with negotiation under the selective procurement method, compliant with the Public Procurement Contracts Regulations 2015. This project involves significant partial demolition, civil new build, and remedial works for decommissioning the nuclear reactor buildings, initially built in the early 1960s.

This tender presents substantial opportunities for businesses specialising in demolition, concrete repair, and decommissioning services. Companies skilled in scaffolding erection and dismantling, as well as the hiring of construction machinery, are particularly well-suited to compete in such a project. Additionally, with procurement focusing on quality and social value aspects, firms with strong technical capabilities and effective project management processes stand to benefit. The project's scale hints at a potential for long-term engagement, as ongoing decommissioning and site management create recurrent opportunities for expert service providers in nuclear decommissioning, civil engineering, and associated construction disciplines.

Lot Information

Lot 1

NRS Ltd. is responsible for the safe and compliant decommissioning of Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station in Gwynedd, North Wales. Built in the early 1960's, the Site ceased generating electricity in 1991 and has been undertaking decommissioning works since.
The next phase of the decommissioning programme will principally feature modification of the two former civil nuclear Reactor Buildings which, in current state, offer safe and secure storage of housed plant. The project will involve the systematic deconstruction and partial demolition of each Reactor Building, delivering a reduced height configuration compliant with existing planning commitments and lessening the visual impact on the landscape. In addition, a package of civil new build and remedial works will be delivered to prolong the durability of the retained structures and reduce disproportionate asset management liability. The end product will offer compliant protection of the stored inventory, ready for successor phases of decommissioning activity on the Site.
