UKRI-2862 Installation of Fibre to provide Resilient Connectivity to Underground Areas
Notice Description
STFC Boulby lab operates at Boulby mine - a working Polyhalite and Salt Mine run by ICL-UK in the North East of England. This optical fibre installation work will install a secondary cable in the main mine shaft and two further cables underground, one attached to the roof of the mine tunnel between the existing laboratory and the new site and the second in a channel in the floor of the mine tunnel between the two locations. This will provide a diverse network with built in redundancy should one cable be damaged.

This project will provide a network connection to a new area of the mine which will allow an increase in experimental opportunity for the laboratory. The project will also include the installation of a replacement fibre down the 1.1km main access shaft at Boulby. This requires the installing contractors to be trained to a level acceptable to ICL-UK to be able to work safely within the shaft. Additional information: The term and conditions relating to this purchase are provided in the Contract, which matches the Contract number cited in the narrative to this Purchase Order and are specific to this Contract. Procurement Information
The award of the contract without prior publication in the Official Journal of the European Union is lawful, as competition is absent for technical reasons. This particular supplier is the only one who is able to meet all the technical, safety and equipment requirements specified to deliver the contract.
