Summary of the contracting process

The UK Research & Innovation has awarded a contract for the supply of a hybrid-pixel electron-counting camera optimised for Life Science applications, specifically for cryoEM and micro-electron diffraction (microED). The procurement stage was an award procedure without prior publication of a call for competition. The contract was signed on the 23rd of February 2023 and has a total value of 215,975 CHF. The buying organization, UKRI, is located in Swindon, United Kingdom, and the procurement falls under the goods category.

This tender presents an opportunity for suppliers like Dectris Limited who can provide advanced small-molecule and 3D micro-crystallography equipment meeting specific technical requirements. Businesses in the laboratory, optical and precision equipment industry, especially those focused on Life Science applications, would find this tender suitable for growth opportunities. The high-speed detector required by UKRI necessitates specific features like speed of over 2000 fps, high image bit depth, and a resolution of 1028 by 1062, creating a niche market for specialized suppliers in this field.

Notice Title

UKRI-2917 RCAH High Speed Detector

Notice Description

Supply of a hybrid-pixel electron-counting camera optimized for Life Science applications, in particular for cryoEM and micro-electron diffraction (microED).

Lot Information

Lot 1

UKRI require a high speed detector for advanced small-molecule and 3D micro-crystallography, to improve capabilities for high speed resolution imaging and crystallographic analysis in our EM facilities. There is only one provider of equipment capable of meeting our requirements which include: 1) Speed of over 2000 fps in 16 bit mode to collect data from many samples rapidly in a single microscope shift; 2) High (32 bit) maximal image bit depth to accurately detect signals on a single image and observe fine crystallographic changes; and 3) Resolution of 1028 by 1062 to solve the structure of the target molecule and collect 1 A data from protein crystals to capture high resolution features such as protons. With only one Supplier able to meet the technical requirements an award of contract without prior publication of a call for competition is justified under regulation 32(2)(b)(ii) of the PCR 2015. Additional information: Procurement Contract Transparency Data: Redacted contract documents will be made available within the next 30 days on the UKRI website at: https://www.ukri.org/about-us/procurement-contract-transparency-data/
