Summary of the contracting process

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority has initiated a tender process for the development of a Gyrotron Cavity Test Rig under the title "Fusion Futures". This tender falls under the services category and is planned to have a budget between £80,000 to £100,000. The work is expected to be completed by March 2025, with a contract duration of 8 months. The location for delivery is OX14 3DB, UK, with the buying organization based at Culham Campus, Abingdon, UK. The procurement stage is currently at the planning phase, and interested parties should take note of the future notice date of August 5, 2024.

This tender presents an opportunity for businesses specializing in engineering design services, design consultancy services, and specialty design services to participate in the development of innovative test rig technology for gyrotron cavities. Companies capable of meeting the technical requirements specified, particularly in thermal load simulation and testing, power density considerations, and cavity design adaptability, are well-suited to compete. The anticipated contract duration and budget provide a clear timeline and financial scope for potential suppliers to consider when preparing their proposals for this procurement opportunity.

Notice Title

Fusion Futures: Development of a Gyrotron Cavity Test Rig

Notice Description

The objective of this work package is to develop a test rig design for testing prototype gyrotron cavities simulating the: * Internal thermal load and associated cooling efficiency * Pressure forces * Vacuum compatibility The test rig would include a thermal head that is inserted into prototype cavities to mimic the induced ohmic loads from the cavity electric field profile. The head could be designed for a specific gyrotron cavity, but the concept adaptable to cavities with diameters in the range of 30 to 50mm, and cavity length 20 to 30mm. Ideally, the thermal profile would be close to consistent with the E-field's power deposition profile and capable of power densities exceeding 30MW/m2.

The test rig should include simplified interfaces for easy replacement of the cavity, while ensuring safe testing conditions. The estimated budget for this is between PS80,000 and PS100,000. This piece of work is required to be completed by March 2025, it is anticipated that this contract will be 8 months long.
