Summary of the contracting process

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is set to award BAE Systems Bofors AB a five-year contract starting in April 2025 for the in-service support of the Archer Artillery System. This contract involves technical design, training, maintenance, repair, obsolescence, and configuration management of the artillery system. Classified under the services category, specifically "Repair and maintenance services of weapons and weapon systems," this procurement falls under specialised technical services that only BAE Systems Bofors AB can provide due to their unique technological capabilities and proprietary information. This process is currently at the tender stage, with specifics of the negotiated procurement without publication of a contract notice being cited for technical reasons, in accordance with UK Defence and Security Public Contracts Regulations.

This tender offers substantial opportunities for businesses engaged in defence and military support services. Companies with expertise in technical re-design, maintenance, and repair of sophisticated weapon systems should consider this a significant growth opportunity. Moreover, businesses that possess the required specialised materials, tools, and testing equipment to meet the MOD's rigorous safety and technical standards should find this contract particularly lucrative. Given BAE Systems Bofors AB’s exclusivity in terms of design and support knowledge, collaborations or subcontracting opportunities associated with this tender could provide avenues for smaller firms to engage with and benefit from this major defence contract.
