Summary of the contracting process

The National Maritime Museum recently initiated and subsequently updated a procurement process for the 'Royal Observatory Greenwich - Meridian Courtyard Paving' project. This public works contract involved renovations at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, specifically targeting the Meridian Courtyard and related historical structures. Originally posted by the National Maritime Museum, located in London, the procurement was in the tender update stage. However, as of October 2024, the project has been cancelled due to funding reallocations and prioritisation of another project.

This opportunity would have been ideal for businesses specialised in historical and architectural restorations, including expertise in excavation and paving, with a collaborative capacity to work with archaeologists. Companies that excel in managing heritage site renovations could have leveraged this tender to enhance their portfolio. Although this particular contract will not proceed, interested contractors are encouraged to remain engaged with the National Maritime Museum for future opportunities.

Notice Title

Royal Observatory Greenwich - Meridian Courtyard Paving

Notice Description

Within the Royal Observatory Greenwich, is the Meridian Courtyard which is the outdoor public visitor space flanked by historic buildings and features; Flamsteed House, Meridian Building, Camera Obscura, the Astronomer's Garden and viewing point over Greenwich. The Meridian Courtyard has suffered areas of ongoing settlement and surveys have discovered the possibility of remnants of buried structures or voids such as redundant basements and walls. An opportunity also exists to improve safe level access across the courtyard by improving the surface in a defined pathway. Accordingly, the client requires expert contractors to lift areas of paving, excavate and explore substrates, liaise with appointed archaeologists, address structures or defects found, reinstate the ground and lay salvaged and new York stone paving.
