Summary of the contracting process

TEES ESK AND WEAR VALLEYS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST has awarded a contract titled "GENERAL MEDICAL INPUT TO SPRINGWOOD, SPECIALIST DEMENTIA UNIT, MALTON" under a Provider Selection Regime (PSR) process, confirmed on 1st December 2024. This service targets the medical practice services industry category, aimed at addressing the healthcare gap in the Springwood ward, located at Malton Hospital, North Yorkshire. The unit, comprising 14 beds, caters to older adults with complex healthcare needs, heightened by organic bed pressures across North Yorkshire, York, and Selby post-pandemic. The contract is valued at £102,000 for an initial 36-month term, with an option to extend for an additional 24 months.

This procurement offers business growth opportunities, particularly for local General Practices capable of providing substantial medical input and multidisciplinary support to the Springwood Specialist Dementia Unit. The contract is well-suited for medical service providers experienced in managing multi-morbidities and providing comprehensive care, including advanced care planning and clinical decision-making support. By participating, businesses can enhance their portfolio in the healthcare sector and potentially secure a long-term contract that could be extended further based on performance.

Notice Title

GENERAL MEDICAL INPUT TO SPRINGWOOD, SPECIALIST DEMENTIA UNIT, MALTON

Notice Description

This service will provide a physical healthcare solution to an existing gap in mainstream service delivery in Springwood ward which is a standalone 14 bedded Specialist Dementia Care Ward for older people with high levels of multi-morbidity and behaviours that challenge, often impacting length of stay because of difficulties identifying successful community (Care Home) placement. The Ward has been commissioned as non-acute unit accepting internal referral (transfers) from other Acute Organic Inpatient Units in York and Scarborough. Due to increasing organic bed pressures across North Yorkshire, York and Selby during the pandemic and post-pandemic era, there has been an exponential increase in the rate of transfer and bed occupancy, with Springwood accepting more patients with higher levels of acuity, frailty, and physical co-morbidities. The service therefore requires a contract with a local General Practice to increase weekly essential Medical input for the unit supports the following: o Effective Multidisciplinary (MDT) communication and decision-making, particularly around patient's non-urgent physical health, multi-morbidities, and frailty o Clinical decision-making about care and treatment, including medication discussions, best interest decisions and advanced care planning. o Additional timely support to Junior Doctors /Staff Grade Doctors / Physical Health Care Practitioners
