Cressing Temple Barn Roof Replacement - Market Engagement
Notice Description
This notice marks the launch of an Essex County Council market engagement to establish contractors who would be interested in participating in an open tender for the following project: Cressing Temple Barns, Witham Road, Cressing, Braintree, CM77 8PD Roof Replacement and Timber Repairs Market Engagement Bidders Day will be held at Cressing Temple Barns, 10:00am to 12:00noon 13th December 2024. Description of the site This project seeks to reduce the deterioration of both barns' roof and timber frames over the next 80-100 years. Cressing Temple in Braintree is a Scheduled Monument, with Grade I listed 13th Century Barns known as the Barley Barn and the Wheat Barn. The Barley Barn is believed to be the oldest standing timber framed barn in the world. Both barns are amongst the few remaining Templar buildings in England. In addition, the site has four Grade II Listed buildings: the Granary, the Farmhouse, the Waggon Lodge, and the wall surrounding the Walled Gardens. In 2022 the Barley Barn and the Wheat Barn were both added to Historic England's 'Vulnerable Register', which means these assets are being monitored by Historic England ahead of potential inclusion on the full published 'Heritage at Risk Register' when there is further deterioration or if there is not a funded repair plan in place. A condition survey has been completed on the Barley Barn and Wheat Barn, these condition surveys have highlighted a complete tile replacement and timber repairs schedule of works. Scope of work * The works will be required to be undertaken in accordance with the Scheduled Monument Consent, details of which will be included at Tender Stage. * To conduct all the repairs and replacement of existing ancient timber frame as set out in the schedule of works. * To remove all the existing tiles on the Barley and Wheat Barns and replace with new either standard or medieval sized coal fired clay tiles, include the replacement of riven laths and elements of lime pointing. * The renewal of all downpipes and guttering. * The works to the barn will be carried out sequentially. Contractor Minimum Requirements for Tender Due to the historical status of the Barley barn and Wheat barn as Scheduled Monument and Grade I listed buildings, contractors will be required to produce a capability statement and a portfolio of previous similar projects with reference to evidence appropriate experience as part of the Tender.
