Summary of the contracting process

The National Oceanography Centre, a sub-central government public authority located in Southampton, announced the successful completion of the RRS James Cook Refit Contract 2025, with all warranties concluded on 4th April 2025. The refit, contracted for £572,188.06 GBP, took place from 30th June to 26th July 2025 following a direct award procurement process due to unforeseen circumstances. The contract initially faced delays but was amended to address additional technical requirements, leveraging legal grounds stated in the Procurement Act 2023. The procurement catered to the repair and maintenance services category and was executed in Gorinchem, Netherlands, with Damen Shipyards serving as the supplier.

This procurement offered significant opportunities in the marine maintenance industry, particularly for businesses specialising in ship refits and technical repair services. It provided an avenue for large-scale suppliers like Damen Shipyards to showcase their capabilities in managing urgent and complex vessel refits. Companies that excel in ship maintenance and repair and can quickly accommodate unforeseen requirements could find similar contracts relevant for future business growth. The contract underlines the importance of agility and expertise in handling critical and time-sensitive public procurement demands.
