Summary of the contracting process

NHS England is in the planning stage of commissioning the National Specialist Medicines Service (NSMS) contract for the period 2027-2030, focusing on pharmacy services. The primary objective is to streamline and enhance the use and safety of medicines across the NHS by developing standardised tools and processes. Key activities involve providing expert clinical quality assurance and supporting frontline service delivery. A preliminary market engagement session is scheduled for 14th April 2026 to unveil the tender timetable, with interested suppliers required to register by 13th April 2026. The estimated contract value is £30 million, and it is critical to note that NHS England, based in London, serves as the buyer, with Jacqueline Powell as the main contact point. The full tender process is expected to open post-May elections, allowing ample time for response formulation.

This procurement process is particularly advantageous for small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) with expertise in pharmacy services. Given the contract's focus on developing and implementing cost-effective tools and processes for medicines management, businesses with innovative solutions in this area stand to benefit significantly. Engaging in this tender provides an opportunity to collaborate with NHS England and make substantial contributions to improving healthcare delivery at both local and national levels. The contract offers a platform to enhance a company's portfolio and establish a strong partnership with a central government public authority.
