Sellafield Limited intends to procure design support for retrievals at the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo and Pile Fuel Cladding Silo, where historic nuclear waste is retrieved and stored. The services cover intelligent client support and oversight, front-end development before the Outline Business Case, early design strategy, and niche nuclear and specialist technical support. The main work is design support services, including input across relevant engineering disciplines. This procurement is at the planning stage: Sellafield Limited has announced an intention to procure, rather than invited suppliers to tender. The planned contract is above the relevant threshold and has an estimated value of £36 million excluding VAT (£43.2 million including VAT). The single planned lot is expected to run from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2030. The buyer has changed its strategy from ten individual mini-competitions to three competition tranches with sub-lots. The work should suit engineering and design consultancies with nuclear-sector capability, particularly suppliers able to provide intelligent client oversight, early business-case development, design strategy and specialist support for radioactive-waste retrieval and storage. Relevant experience is likely to include working on complex nuclear facilities, legacy waste programmes, retrieval systems, safety cases, multidisciplinary engineering and infrastructure enabling works. Firms with the capacity to support several related disciplines or to form delivery teams across the tranche sub-lots may be well placed when the competitions are run. The planned lot is identified as suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises and voluntary, community and social enterprises, creating scope for specialist smaller providers and collaborative supply-chain arrangements. Suppliers should prepare for framework-based competition and the revised tranche structure.
