Summary of the contracting process

Aston University procured hazardous and chemical waste management services for its teaching, research and operational activities in Birmingham. Lot 2 was awarded to LABWASTE LTD on 29 June 2026 for £350,000 gross (£350,000 stated as the contract value), with a contract period from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2028 and extensions available until 31 July 2031. The award remains subject to a standstill period ending 12 August 2026, with signature scheduled for 31 August 2026. Evaluation used a procurement-specific questionnaire, quality and price assessment, weighted 45% quality and 55% price. The related Lot 4 clinical and pharmaceutical waste award was withdrawn on 30 July 2026 because existing arrangements still meet the university’s requirements.

Suppliers with demonstrable laboratory-waste experience, resilient operational capacity and clear sustainability, KPI and recovery arrangements would be well placed when Aston University next reviews this requirement.

Aston University sought the provision of Hazardous and Chemical Waste (Laboratory) services as part of a wider multi-lot Waste Management procurement exercise. Lot 2 comprises the compliant collection, handling, transportation, treatment, recovery and disposal of hazardous and chemical laboratory waste arising from teaching, research and operational activities across Aston University. The contract is awarded for an initial period of 2 years commencing on 1 September 2026, with extension options available until 31 July 2031.

Planning Information

Aston is beginning the pre-market engagement process in relation to it waste management requirements. These will either be packaged within an all inclusive contract, or split into several contracts. Aston is inviting responses to a formal Request For Information ('RFI') to obtain information from the market. This will help Aston to better understand the structure and capability of the market, as well as providing key insights that can be used to identify the most suitable route to market and ensure Aston's specification is fit for purpose.
