Summary of the contracting process

The contract for the "Ham Street Woods NNR Track Surfacing 2025" was awarded by Natural England, a public authority within the central government located in London. This procurement falls under the works category, specifically involving drainage, resurfacing, and surface work for footpaths. The project aims to improve the access tracks within the Ham Street Woods National Nature Reserve near Ashford, Kent, and is expected to enhance visitor experience by providing year-round access. The procurement process employed was an open competition below the threshold, and the tender stage is now complete with MRF Contracting Limited appointed as the supplier. The work began on 18th August 2025 and is scheduled to conclude by 29th August 2025.

This tender presents substantial opportunities for businesses specialising in civil engineering, particularly those involved in small to medium infrastructure projects such as road surfacing and maintenance. Companies like MRF Contracting Limited, an SME, were successfully able to compete for this project. Businesses with capabilities in handling similar projects within nature reserves or public pathways will find this type of contract beneficial for growth and expanding their portfolio of completed works in the public sector. Additionally, the process being described as 'below threshold' suggests potential ease of entry for smaller businesses into public procurement frameworks.

Notice Title

Ham Street Woods NNR Track Surfacing 2025

Notice Description

The access tracks running through Ham Street Woods National Nature Reserve / SSSI to the south of Ashford in Kent (managed by Natural England) become very wet and muddy in winter due to the clay substrate. The main aim of this project is to surface 300m of track that link to a 1km surfaced bridleway (the main public right of way bisecting the reserve) to create year-round circular routes for visitors, thereby enhancing their enjoyment of the site and reducing disturbance to the wider woodland. The works also include a top dressing to 425m of bridleway to bring it up to standard. The works are likely to take up to three weeks and will need to be completed by the end of August while ground conditions remain favourable.
