Summary of the contracting process

The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, in collaboration with other major NHS bodies, is spearheading the Great North Healthcare Alliance's Strategic Construction Programme. This procurement process is currently in the planning stage, focuses on the construction industry, and is set to take place in the UKC region. Envisioned as a 15-year programme worth up to £3 billion, this project commences in April 2026 with future collaborations announced on 1st January 2026. Potential bidders have opportunities to engage in preliminary discussions by attending an engagement session in Newcastle on 11th July 2025.

This extensive construction endeavour presents a significant opportunity for businesses, especially SMEs, within the construction and technical services sectors. It offers a platform to contribute to major infrastructure improvements and health service transformations across a wide geographic area. Companies possessing expertise in innovative construction, digital service integration, and sustainable building practices will find this programme to be an ideal opportunity to expand their portfolios and demonstrate their capabilities in a large-scale public sector project. Engaging with this initiative could not only enhance business growth but also contribute to the regional economy and workforce development.

Notice Title

Great North Healthcare Alliance - Strategic Construction Programme for Service Transformation

Notice Description

This work aims to tackle the deeply tricky challenges of backlog maintenance and infrastructure but also take the opportunity to improve population health, move care closer to people, support a switch to digital services while moving toward net zero. The current work programme across the Alliance for the next four years is, in itself, a significant pipeline, likely to be in the hundreds of millions of pounds and involves some innovative and transformational projects building on work we have already delivered - for example Gateshead's leadership to create a Community Diagnostic Centre at the Metro Centre. We have ambition to go further and are mapping out a 15- year programme, currently potentially valued at up to PS3b. This early engagement gives us the opportunity to share information on technical services, construction and funding, and give you a chance to shape our thinking before we look for more formal partnerships this Autumn. While this is an amazing programme in its own right, it will be a missed opportunity if it does not add to the North East and North Cumbria economy and increase the skills and capability of the region. This scope will be wide and varied, and we anticipate running multiple specific procurements across the programme all of which is subject to funding. We are holding an engagement session on Friday 11th July in Newcastle, due to capacity constraints places are limited, please contact Lynsey Allan if you wish to attend at lynsey.allan@nhs.net

Planning Information

In 2024 Gateshead Health Foundation Trust, The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, North Cumbria Integrated Care Foundation Trust, and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, came together to form the Great North Healthcare Alliance. In addition to collaboration in research, digital services and finance, the Alliance has been looking at how it works together to manage its buildings and supports health and care service transformation across a patch from Whitehaven to Berwick. The engagement deadline may be extended.
