Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process for the "4D Animate Platform/Power Technologies (4DAPT)" project is being overseen by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, under the central government authority of the UK. The initiative is designed to explore advancements in intelligent 3D printed materials to facilitate self-adaptive platforms. Initially active, this competitive process had a specified deadline for expressions of interest on 24th October 2025, though it has since been marked as cancelled as of 29th October 2025. Even with the cancellation, the procurement was categorised under the research and development services, focused within the UK, and intended to use a competitive flexible procedure method.

This endeavour presents potential opportunities for growth for businesses involved in innovative technologies and research and development services, particularly those with expertise in 4D printing and smart material applications. With a proposed gross budget of £1,560,000 for relevant lot value and associated services, the framework agreement initially considered could have presented significant opportunities for universities, public laboratories, and businesses ready to delve into cutting-edge material technologies. Although currently cancelled, keeping abreast of updates on the Defence Sourcing Portal may provide relevant entities with future opportunities as plans evolve.

4D Animate Platform/Power Technologies (4DAPT)

Notice Description

Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and Agence de l'innovation de defense (AID) are jointly launching a call for expressions of interest (EOI) aimed at identifying French Universities and Public Laboratories and British Universities who can address scientific questions raised in the field of 4D printing. The aim is to accelerate the use of intelligent 3D printed materials through design, manufacturing and modelling to provide intelligent or animated components for self-adaptive platforms. Despite the potential benefits of 4D printing, many challenges remain before it can be widely applied.
