Notice Title

HMSC- Provision of Asylum Support and Casework

Notice Description

The asylum system is undergoing frequent changes, creating challenges for individuals and local authorities. Many asylum seekers lack legal representation and face barriers in accessing support. The council aims to mitigate these risks by commissioning a service that provides expert advice, supports council staff, and reduces the likelihood of homelessness among newly recognised refugees. The service is crucial in ensuring that people do not miss short application windows and are given high quality advice when making important decisions for their future. Haringey considers that these services are crucial to prevent more complex immigration related issues in future which can lead to homelessness and destitution. Last year the Home Office commenced plans to clear the backlog of asylum claims. Figures vary but this could impact 133,409 people who as of September 2024 were awaiting an initial decision on their asylum claim. Haringey Migrant Support Centre has been working closely with the Resettlement Team during the last 18 months to provide second-tier advice, workshops at the National Hotel, and individual advice and casework support to asylum seekers. Prior to the closure of the National Hotel (Home Office Commissioned dispersal accommodation), HMSC were contracted for a period to triage/audit single male individuals and provide safeguarding recommendations to the Home Office, regarding the individuals' future relocation.
