Summary of the contracting process

North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust is currently in the planning stage for procuring Bereavement and Mortuary Services, which are to be provided across multiple hospital sites, including Peterborough City Hospital, Hinchingbrooke Hospital, and Stamford and Rutland Hospital. This falls under the services category within the funeral and related services industry. The procurement process initiated is a tender, with pre-market engagement scheduled with a deadline on 19th December 2025. Potential suppliers are encouraged to reach out via email for one-to-one meetings. The procurement planning involves consideration of service resilience, inclusivity, and compliance with NHS standards, particularly in light of recommendations from the David Fuller Inquiry.

This tender offers valuable growth opportunities for businesses in the funeral and bereavement services sector, including SMEs. Suppliers can leverage this opportunity to offer robust services such as collection and transfer of deceased patients, hospital-arranged funerals, and digital tracking of deceased patients. Services must adhere to the National Association of Funeral Directors Code of Practice and accommodate cultural and individual care requirements. Businesses equipped to provide secure and dignified facilities for temporary storage, out-of-hours services, and coordination across multiple hospital sites would be particularly suitable. The gross contract value is estimated at £140,000 GBP, with a renewal option after the initial three-year contract period starting in July 2026. Businesses enhancing service governance and compliance with NHS standards could gain a competitive edge in this procurement process.
