Summary of the contracting process

The Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract titled "Army support for integration and maintenance of edge, computation and storage capabilities" under the industry category of military electronic systems development and testing, located in the United Kingdom. This contract, valued at £3,700,000, focuses on integrating and maintaining Google Cloud Platform edge, storage, and compute capabilities. The procurement process was classified as an 'award' stage and involved a direct award due to the supplier's exclusive rights, with the Ministry of Defence acting as the buying organisation. The contract period is slated to begin on 1st April 2026 and conclude on 31st March 2027, with the contract's signature scheduled for 25th March 2026. The procurement process is part of a specialised regime focusing on defence and security, further emphasised by its necessity for enhancing operational capability and safety of the armed forces.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in IT infrastructure, cloud services, and military systems development. The awarded supplier, British Telecommunications plc, indicates potential collaborations or subcontracting opportunities for businesses with expertise in software engineering, cloud integration, or secure electronic systems within contested environments. Such businesses would benefit from aligning their services to military specifications and understanding advanced cloud technologies, allowing them to contribute to and expand within this specialised market segment. Given the direct award due to exclusive rights, similar businesses should aim to establish partnerships or develop innovations to compete in future tenders requiring such proprietary capabilities.

Notice Title

Army support for integration and maintenance of edge, computation and storage capabilities

Notice Description

The Authority requires support to integrate and maintain Google Cloud Platform (GCP) edge, storage, and compute capabilities. Under this contract, the supplier will deliver full integration of workloads into the Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) application, along with all associated architectural documentation, software engineering, and automation. This contract will enable key Army objectives and exercises scheduled over the coming year. The requirement underpins the Army's need to develop a next-generation, deployable edge compute and storage capability operating at SECRET. This capability must integrate with the Hyperscale Cloud Solution (HCS) and host mission-critical decision-support and targeting workloads within contested environments. It is essential for demonstrating credible readiness and deterrence, as well as reducing risk to future delivery decisions through controlled deployment, testing, and evaluation of a secure edge architecture. As the requirement aligns with the Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) Appliance, the service will be delivered by British Telecommunications plc (BT), which holds exclusive rights to provide this capability. This is exclusively a Professional Services Contract.
