Summary of the contracting process

The Isle of Wight Council has completed a procurement process for the supply of a lithium battery setup for the Cowes Floating Bridge, located in Newport, United Kingdom. The procurement, which falls under the industry category of electrical machinery and consumables, reached the contract award stage on 27th May 2026. This process was carried out using a direct procurement method, below the threshold and without competition, and the contract took effect from 24th June 2026, concluding on 15th March 2030. The total contract value is £38,400 gross. The batteries will be delivered within the South East UK region, specifically to Newport, UKJ34.

This tender presents business growth opportunities for companies specialising in electrical equipment, particularly those with expertise or strategic supply chains in lithium-ion phosphate batteries. Large-scale suppliers that can support the council's transition to more advanced battery technologies or businesses with cost-effective logistics solutions in place might find this contract aligning with their strengths. Companies capable of innovating within the context of public transportation systems would be well-suited to compete for similar contracts in the future, especially given the emphasis on sustainable and resilient energy solutions.

Notice Title

Supply of Lithium Battery Set Up For Cowes Floating Bridge

Notice Description

Floating Bridge 6 has 4 x 6v batteries which power the DC electrical system, namely everything on board that would run off a normal household plug or usb, lighting, electronics, etc. Failing batteries were responsible for a service suspension between 24th and 29th January 2025and the batteries were replaced. The Floating Bridge Senior Technical Officer (FBSTO) added this replacement task to the Floating Bridges Preventative Maintenance Schedule with a view to replacing these batteries annually to ensure reliance and resilience. The FBSTO ordered replacement lead acid batteries on 13th January 2026 but was informed that the model which is compatible for our requirements is no longer being produced/sold off the shelf in this country, largely due to the widespread changeover to lithium power. The only place the FBSTO could source them from was Canada, with a jump from PS700 per unit (we need 4) to over PS1000 per unit, along with an extended lead-time of approximately 6 months. In order to overcome this potential problem of lack of compatible batteries in the future, it is proposed that an alternator and a 48v lithium-ion phosphate battery is installed on the Floating Bridge.
