Summary of the contracting process

Cambridge City Council is overseeing the Civic Quarter Project, targeting the refurbishment of its key assets, the Guildhall and the Corn Exchange. This process requires a strategic procurement for removals and storage services, specifically in the industry category of relocation services. Located in Cambridge, UKH12, the procurement is currently at the planning stage with a market engagement scheduled to conclude by 17 July 2026. The service contract is expected to begin on 1 October 2026 and conclude on 30 September 2029. Companies interested are encouraged to express their interest and must be accredited by the British Removals Association, ensuring the adherence to standards during the refurbishment period starting January 2027, with detailed decant phases outlined for each venue.

This procurement presents a valuable growth opportunity for businesses specialising in removals and storage, particularly if they have prior experience with handling heritage items and sensitive equipment. Suitable for SMEs, the contract anticipates a significant commitment in packing, storing, and eventually reinstating items. Engaging in this tender can expand a company’s portfolio, especially those offering local storage solutions within the Cambridge area, ideally suiting businesses with existing infrastructure that includes non-climate-controlled, yet stable storage environments. This preliminary engagement sets the stage for future phases, where early involvement could provide a competitive edge.
