Summary of the contracting process

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has procured occupational health services for its approximately 9,000 employees, whose provision was previously split across its research councils. The aim is to bring this into a single UKRI-wide service. UK Shared Business Services Ltd managed the procurement on UKRI’s behalf. The competition attracted eight suppliers, including six SMEs among the seven final-stage bidders, indicating that smaller providers were able to progress. Technical quality carried substantially more weight than price, and finalists had to demonstrate their proposed service in a structured presentation. Suppliers should therefore be able to evidence a robust delivery model and communicate its quality convincingly, alongside competitive commercial terms.
