Summary of the contracting process

National Grid UK Limited is seeking electric vehicle charging equipment and services to provide safe, reliable and auditable charging for its vehicles and users at substations and offices across England and Wales. The requirement covers charger supply, design participation, installation and commissioning, warranty and on-site support, as well as ongoing maintenance and a dedicated operating platform for connectivity, payments, user support and reporting. There are three lots: supply, civil works and installation of AC and DC chargers; mobile DC chargers that can be moved between sites; and operation and maintenance of the charging platform, including planned and ad hoc maintenance. The work is for National Grid’s operational sites, with delivery across a broad area of England and Wales.

National Grid invited suppliers to participate through a multi-stage competitive flexible procedure. The first stage is a pre-qualification questionnaire assessing suitability, capability, experience and financial standing; suppliers passing mandatory requirements may proceed to the request-for-proposal stage, with possible negotiations. Requests to participate were due by 9 October 2026 at 23:59. Contracts are scheduled to run from 30 June 2027 to 30 June 2032, with three possible one-year extensions. The individual lot values are £21.15 million for AC/DC charger supply and installation, £3.7 million for mobile DC chargers and £5 million for the operating platform and maintenance. Technical quality carries 65% and the commercial element 35% for each lot. Suppliers may compete for and win multiple lots.

The opportunity suits suppliers able to deliver electric vehicle charging infrastructure at utility sites, from civil works and equipment supply through installation, commissioning and support. There is also a distinct route for businesses specialising in mobile DC charging equipment, and for providers of charging-management platforms, connectivity, payment systems, user support, reporting and planned or responsive maintenance. Bidders need to show relevant technical ability and experience, competent resources, suitable systems and organisational capacity, alongside adequate financial standing and compliance with applicable legal, statutory and regulatory requirements. National Grid’s standard supplier requirements and project-specific technical requirements apply; equivalent qualifications, accreditations or standards are accepted where referenced. The initial questionnaire is pass/fail against mandatory criteria, rather than a ranked competition. Suppliers that can cover more than one workstream may pursue multiple lots, with no cap on the number awarded to one supplier.
