Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is exploring the market for delivery of Tier 4 obesity surgery services. The work is a specialist hospital and related healthcare service intended to support patients requiring the highest level of bariatric surgical care, in line with the NHS England specification. Delivery will take place in the United Kingdom, with the Trust managing the requirement from Sheffield. This is a single service requirement rather than a set of separately described service lots. The work will suit organisations that provide specialist obesity surgery and can operate within NHS clinical, governance and service-delivery requirements. The Trust is using this exercise to understand supplier interest and the market’s ability to deliver the service before deciding on any future procurement.

This procurement is at the planning stage and is currently a market engagement exercise, not a call for competition. The Trust expects a future notice to be published by 31 October 2026. It has indicated an intended contract period from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2030. Interested providers are expected to request the market-engagement instructions and supplier response form, raise questions by 5pm on 17 August 2026, and submit the completed supplier response by 5pm on 28 August 2026; responses are expected by 21 August 2026. The engagement response will be used for information and will not be scored. The intended procurement approach and any future competition arrangements remain to be established.

This exercise is relevant to established providers of Tier 4 obesity surgery, including specialist hospitals, NHS organisations and independent healthcare providers with the clinical capability to deliver complex bariatric surgery. Suitable suppliers should be able to demonstrate services aligned with the NHS England specification, supported by appropriately qualified multidisciplinary clinical teams, safe hospital facilities, surgical capacity and robust patient pathways. Experience of delivering specialist obesity care within regulated healthcare environments will be important, alongside effective clinical governance, safeguarding, quality assurance and outcomes monitoring. Providers should use the engagement to explain their service model, capacity, expertise and ability to work with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It is a preparation exercise for potential future procurement, rather than an opportunity to bid for a contract now.
