Summary of the contracting process

NHS England commissioned a Radiotherapy Quality Assurance (RTTQA) programme delivered by the QA team hosted at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, in Northwood. This is a specialist health service supporting the safe introduction of renal stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for cancer and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for eligible patients with essential tremor. The team will lead pre-assessment quality assurance for up to 30 radiotherapy providers in England. Its work is intended to ensure that eligible centres can deliver these complex treatments to a consistent standard, reducing variation in clinical practice and risks to patients. The requirement also supports radiotherapy quality assurance for clinical trial participation across the UK.

The procurement is complete and the contract was awarded directly without competition as a below-threshold procurement. NHS England awarded the contract to the National Radiotherapy Trials Quality Assurance Group (RTTQA), the sole UK provider identified for this service. The award is active and covers one lot. The award date and contract signature date are both 11 August 2026. The contract runs from 11 August 2026 to 31 March 2027. Its value is £60,444.30 including any applicable taxes, in total. The procurement was evaluated through a direct-award route rather than competitive tendering. The contract description records that the service supports delivery of renal SABR and SRS for essential tremor following NHS commissioning prioritisation and covers quality assurance activity needed over the programme period.

This requirement shows demand for highly specialised radiotherapy quality assurance rather than general healthcare support. A credible competitor for comparable work would need an established team able to assess radiotherapy providers before they deliver complex SABR and SRS treatments, apply consistent clinical and technical standards, and support safe implementation across multiple centres. Relevant experience includes leading national or multi-centre radiotherapy QA programmes, supporting clinical trial participation, and managing assurance for new clinical indications. The incumbent’s evidence includes previous NHS England SABR commissioning-through-evaluation work, SRS/SRT service assurance and multi-year SABR roll-outs covering lung, oligometastatic and pancreatic cancers. Suppliers would also need sufficient specialist capacity to assess up to 30 providers and understand NHS radiotherapy commissioning and clinical governance.

Radiotherapy Quality Assurance (RTTQA)

Notice Description

This is a business case to fund a Radiotherapy Quality Assurance (RTTQA) programme provided by the QA team hosted at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. The team will lead the pre-assessment quality assurance of up to 30 radiotherapy providers to enable local delivery of for renal Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) cancer and Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for essential tremor, both of which are new clinical indications recently supported for routine commissioning via Clinical Priorities Advisory Group (CPAG) prioritisation following the policy development process. The team hosted at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (MVCC) hosted at East and North Herts NHS Trust, is the sole provider of this service in the UK. QA plays a fundamental part to clinical trial participation in the UK and is led by the RTTQA team. The experienced team has led the QA process previously as part of the NHS England specialised commissioning SABR commissioning through evaluation programme from 2015-2018, SRS RTTQA following the reprocurement of the SRS/SRT service in 2024, and completion of a multiyear programme of SABR rollout for several clinical indications including primary lung cancer and simple oligometastatic disease and more recently pancreatic cancers. QA is fundamental to ensuring the safe and effective rollout of renal SABR and SRS for essential temor in England over the next 12 months. This approach will ensure that all eligible centres deliver SABR to these very complex tumours to a consistently high quality standard to minimise risks to patients thus reducing unwarranted variation in clinical practice. Once completed eligible radiotherapy providers in England will be able to deliver SABR for renal cancers and SRS for eligible patients with essential tremor. Due to delays arising from administrative and operational circumstances, NHS England awarded this contract to Radiotherapy quality Assurance (RTTQA) commencing 01.07.2026
